VITAL 5G

3rd Party Experimentation

FAQs

Can we sign an NDA?

Absolutely, we can certainly draft a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) for any 3rd party experimenter. To get started, we would need some further details such as the purpose of the NDA, and any specific terms or requirements you would like to include. This will help us create a tailored agreement that meets your needs. The other option is that a 3rd party experimenter drafts an NDA, which is then reviewed and signed by our project coordinator.

Why is it for free?

The 3rd party experimentation enables organizations to experiment with project assets and explore the capabilities of 5G in a simplified manner, using the VITAL-5G platform, and to develop new and/or to enhance the existing vertical services. You get zero-cost access to technology experts from across Europe, who will support you in developing and optimizing your applications and services for use on 5G networks. Why? Because this allows you to focus on understanding the benefits of 5G and showcasing the performance of your application.

Can we only use datasets and not develop Network Applications?

Yes, that is also possible. Any 3rd party experimenter can use the VITAL-5G platform to collect historical and real-time data related to the performance of network, platform, or services. The subscription to the Monitoring platform will ensure real-time data collection, as well as the retrieval of historical data, which could be convenient for training AI/ML algorithms of various purposes.

Is there a form for registration?

Yes, a form for registration (application form) is available on the project website, along with the other information related to the 3rd party experimentation.

Can we keep our results confidential?

Absolutely. The ownership of any intellectual property developed by a participant in the context of the 3rd party experimentation will remain the sole and exclusive property of the participant. The VITAL-5G consortium does not claim any license or any intellectual property rights in participant’s new results, except for the limited license to report the 3rd party experimentation outcomes. By registering for the 3rd party experimentation, the participant (representative of an institution participating in the 3rd party experimentation) affirms that the participant is at least 18-year-old and competent to enter into an agreement such as this. The participant understands that the participant will be exposed to the works of others and is bound to respect whatever licenses are in effect on their Intellectual Property.

Do you make simulations of the network for the performance and coverage?

Network performance is measured through a set of predetermined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), which are in real-time reported to the VITAL-5G platform’s monitoring tools. A 3rd party experimenter can subscribe to that monitoring platform and collect either real-time or historical data, for various purposes such as determining network performance and coverage, or training AI/ML algorithms. The data is collected from the real-life network infrastructure deployed in the sea and river ports (Antwerp and Galati), and the warehouse (Athens), i.e., it is not simulated or emulated.

How do you collect data to train models?

Any 3rd party experimenter can use the VITAL-5G platform to collect historical and real-time data related to the performance of network, platform, or services. The subscription to the Monitoring platform will ensure real-time data collection, as well as the retrieval of historical data, which could be convenient for training AI/ML algorithms of various purposes.

What kind of resources do I have access to?

You have access to computing, storage and networking resources and a list of already available Network Applications. You can combine Network Applications according to your Use Case requirements.

Can I onboard more than one application?

Yes. You can onboard more than one application at a time, depending on the available resources at that time. You will receive a notification if there aren't any more resources for the onboarding on new apps.

Can I host my own custom application on the platform?

Compute, storage, and network resources can be allocated for third-party applications (hosted in VMs or containers), but before deployment, the required computing resources need to be agreed upon case by case.

Can I use certain sensors for my Use Case?

All sensors are dedicated to usage for the already defined Network Applications, but we can always evaluate a possibility to install new sensors/devices provided by 3rd party experimenters. You will have access to the data stream from the sensors by using the Network Applications you will require.

What network parameters are monitored by the platform?

The parameter list is available at this link.

If I want to monitor elements related to the application, can I do it with the help of tools within the platform?

KPIs related to performance of applications/services can be monitored using the VITAL-5G platform (Monitoring platform module). The application itself must implement a mechanism to publish its own metrics to VITAL -5G monitoring platform, or subscribe to other metrics available in the Monitoring platform dashboards. In both cases, VITAL 5G partners provide a technical support and necessary SDKs that can be used for pub/sub process.

What kind of mobile network QoS can I receive for my application?

VITAL-5G testbeds support enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB) and ultra-low latency and reliable communication (uRLLC) network slices, which can be associated on a per-UE and per-application basis.
