VITAL 5G

WINGS ICT Solutions is the coordinator of the VITAL-5G H2020 project. The project will contribute to the transformation of the Transport & Logistics (T&L) sector, and will exhibit the vital role of 5G, which will power IoT / AI applications for T&L. In this direction the VITAL-5G will create a flexible and open experimentation facility. Much needed applications in real-life conditions, utilizing 5G connectivity, will be validated.

WINGS develops advanced solutions for verticals which gained traction: (1) AIRWINGS for air quality (outdoor / indoor, in production and manufacturing), civil and environment protection (fire protection); (2) ARTEMIS for the proactive management of utilities (energy, water, gas infrastructures); (3) WINGSPARK for advanced mobility services and for the management of transport infrastructures; (4) AQUAWINGS for sustainable and effective aquaculture; (5) AGNES for sustainable agriculture and food safety; (6) WINGSChariot for logistics and industry 4.0/5.0 applications; (7) STARLIT for health / wellness. Moreover, targeted applications for defense / security are soon to be announced. The technology foundation comprises advanced wireless (4G/5G/B5G/WiFi), IoTcloud and big data platforms, AI, orchestration and diagnostics, AR. WINGS is proud to have cooperated from the beginning with world-class companies, in Greece, the UK, Germany and the Netherlands. A series of cooperations with the US has been established, while activities for strengthening the footprints in the Middle East and in Africa are taking place. In the context of VITAL-5G project, WINGS is proud to contribute with its WINGSChariot expertise, which will be further enhanced. WINGS leads the use case: “Automation & remote operation of freight logistics (Warehouse logistics)”, which will be trialed in the Athens node. The Athens node builds on 5G-EVE Athens technologies and knowledge. Trials and experiments will happen in the Diakinisis premises, at Aspropyrgos (east of Athens), where 3 different scenarios are trialed. This use case intends to demonstrate the feasibility of applying the 5G technology in an overall Logistics context, for optimizing warehousing operations through an integrated state-of-the-art operational system based on Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). The operation of AGVs can be automated and remotely assisted using HD video streaming functionality to enable human interaction, while additional AI/ML techniques will be introduced for post-processing operational data in order to improve the end-to-end functionality of the warehouse ecosystem. The use case requires some functionalities that are better provided or only supported by 5G, such as reduced latency, the support of different requirements, and high data rates to support the use of inputs to the guidance process, such as high-definition video and/or LIDAR sensors.

WINGS ICT SOLUTIONS realizes Use Case 3 through its WINGSChariot platform, a solution designed to enhance the Smartification, Automation and Real-time Visibility of operations and workflows in the Logistics sector. Through the development and implementation of specific modular functions based on advanced Data Processing (Machine Learning, Big Data), Remote operations and control (Robotics, AGVs), Augmented Reality (AR) and networking technologies (4G, 5G, IoT), WINGSChariot targets the cost-efficient, intelligent management of Green and Sustainable Logistics. First results indicate promising benefits, in terms of worker efficiency and stress reduction, as well as order management efficiency, by means of the introduced 5G / AGV powered operations.
